This interactive workshop provides mental health clinicians with an introduction to the field of Sport and Performance Psychology (SPP) and explores how performance-focused principles can complement clinical practice. Participants will begin with an overview of SPP and the sport environment, including the unique psychological demands placed on athletes across developmental levels and competitive settings.
The workshop will introduce foundational theoretical orientations and mental skills training, including practical applications of skills such as goal setting, imagery, self-talk, attentional control, confidence, and performance routines. Participants will also explore the important distinction between therapy and performance coaching, including considerations for scope of practice, treatment goals, and when each approach may be appropriate.
Additional topics will include incorporating sport psychology into private practice, opportunities for clinicians to expand their work with athletes and other performers, and current trends shaping the sport and performance landscape. Through discussion and practical examples, clinicians…
